Evergreen is located in the mountains West of Denver, so you may be wondering if you are Evergreen looks like Narnia most of the time. I am an Evergreen resident and I can tell you first hand what Winter is like and about how much snow we get in Evergreen Colorado on an annual basis.
According to the weather services Evergreen averages about 90 inches or 7.5 feet of snow per year.
According to the weather services Evergreen averages about 90 inches or 7.5 feet of snow per year. You may be asking yourself, is that a lot of snow? I am originally from Texas so 2 inches used to be considered a lot of snow to me. When I was researching Evergreen prior to moving here I was trying to get an idea of what I was about to get myself and my family into. At that time the only data was statistical data which is nice but nothing can replace getting your info directly from the horses mouth…me.
I have lived in Evergreen for 7 years now and I feel like I have a good feel for what Winter is like and about how much snow we get in Evergreen. The elevation of my house is around 7,500 feet and most of the areas that you travel will be between 7,000 to 8,000 in elevation. The amount of snow you get is in direct relation to your elevation. The higher your elevation typically the more snow you get.
From my experience crazy as it seems we really don’t get a lot of snow during the Winter months.
My house is at a pretty average elevation for Evergreen so I will be speaking from my perspective. From my experience crazy as it seems we really don’t get a lot of snow during the Winter months. There will be days where we will be anything from a dusting to around 9 inches of snow. I’m not saying we won’t ever get more but this is a typical range. 9 inches of snow is not going to slow you down or effect your life in any way. We typically get snow starting in late September to early October and we can get snow all the way up to May.
Spring is when when Evergreen gets most of its snow. We typically get about 3 or 4 snow storms that come through that drop 12 to 18 inches of snow each.
Spring is when when Evergreen gets most of its snow. We typically get about 3 or 4 snow storms that come through that drop 12 to 18 inches of snow each. Depending on where you are from that may sound like a lot of snow. I will tell you first hand that it really is not that big of a deal. You will need to do some snow shoveling and it may be challenging getting out of your driveway. On days like this it may be best to stay home, start a fire and watch a good movie. If you absolutely have to get out then you will need an all wheel drive vehicle. The county does a great job of maintaining the roads so getting around town won’t be a problem.
This is typical of a Spring Snow Storm – this is between 15-18 inches of snow.
Evergreen is a very sunny place so the great news is after it snows the sun comes out and within a day or two you may never know that it had snowed. The sun melts the snow very quickly so you are never sitting around deep in snow.
Typical Spring Snow Storm…Snow and Temps in upper 20’s on Monday and Sunny and Temps in the 60’s rest of the week. As you can see the sun comes out and melts all the snow.
From my experience we do get 60 – 90 inches of snow each year but by no means is Evergreen, Narnia. Do we get 90 inches of snow every year, no. Last Winter (2017) we did not have more than 40 inches of snow total in Evergreen at my house. It truly varies by year.
I have been in the high Rockies, like Breckenridge and it be full on snowing and then drive to Evergreen an hour later and it be a bright sunny day.
Evergreen has about 300 Sunny Days Per Year. How Amazing Is That?
I really enjoy the fact that Evergreen gets four full seasons and Winter is one of my favorite. When it snows in Evergreen it is like living in a Thomas Kinkade painting. Imagine a small town, with rustic mountain cabins covered in snow like icing and smoke bellowing from chimneys surrounded by pine trees. The snow is beautiful to look at and play in. I look forward to Winter every year.
